Did the Matte Paste change? What's different? Why the change?
The new Matte Paste is an improved version of our 2015 formula. It's infused with clays, oils and waxes that help improve hair and scalp appearance. It is now more pliable than our original formula and is better suited for modern styles.
Why did we change it?
1. We've upgraded the quality of ingredients, infusing it with oils, clays and waxes that are good for your hair and scalp.
2. We've updated the performance to be more workable and pliable. The original version was very tacky and very hard to work through once applied which reduced its versatility and only made it ideal for short hair.
The original formula will be re-released as Matte Paste Classic eventually.
Is the new Matte Paste water-based?
The new Matte Paste is infused with oils, clays and waxes that make it more water-resistant, but it is still a water-based product meaning that it will wash out with a shampooing of the hair.
Should the Matte Paste be applied to wet or dry hair?
We recommend that the new Matte Paste be applied to dry hair for best results with respect to hold, texture and a dry finish. If you'd like to get a natural shine and less a textured look, apply to lightly damp hair.
What's the difference between Matte Paste & Clay Pomade?
The Matte Paste features a dry and matte finish that is best for choppy, messy and textured looks. The Clay Pomade features a light and natural shine that is best for weightless flow and control.
Matte Paste works well for my coarse textured hair, medium/short length. Give a flexible control and enhances texture. Doesn't irritate my scale and washed out well. Good stuff!
Not a bad product just not for me. A little too stiff and heavy for my thick hair. Was hoping for something a bit lighter and more water soluble.

I used the old formula of the matte paste and came to re-up my stock. I knew before making the purchase that the formula had changed, but decided to buy one to try out since I loved the original so much. I wouldn't recommend this if you're considering trying it based off the old formula.
I have a very thick head of hair and a short fade with texture. I found this to not have a strong hold at all. I initially thought I wasn't using enough, but in my experimenting, I'll argue that actually just has a low to medium hold.
Additionally, no matter the amount of product used, this will immediately leave a build up on your hair that doesn't rinse out in showers between shampoos, like other similar products do. If you shower daily, but only shampoo 2x-3x a week, this will be an issue for you.
It does have a nice smell though. Shipping was quick.

My reply is that this new formula overwhelmingly has been well received by our customers. It has out performed and outsold the previous formula.
I use this product regularly and tested it for nearly a year before putting it to market. From my test, its performance is more versatile and the feeling I have in my hair after use and wash is that the texture of my hair is better and feels nicer. When reformulating this product, I introduced ingredients and oils with that purpose in mind.
