A guide to finding the right styling product.
Luis MorenoRight now, there is abundance in options with regards to styling products and brands. Finding what you need or are looking for can be overwhelming but it shouldn’t be.
Here are 3 things I always consider when selecting a hair product for myself:
HOLD
SHINE
STYLE
These guides can help you establish your own standards for what matters to you and expedite your selection process, reducing uncertainty in our purchasing decisions. Let me explain...
1. HOLD
Is your hair hard to manage? Is it stubborn? Do you have a lot of hair, coarse and thick? Or do you have fine hair? Is your hair thinning?
If you have stubborn, coarse, and difficult-to-manage hair, opting for a strong hold is advisable. This type of product requires less product to tame your hair compared to a lighter hold product, saving you money and time.
If you have fine or thinning hair, opt for light or medium-hold styling products. They’ll feel less heavy on your hair compared to stronger hold products. Additionally, if your hair is thinning, a light or medium-hold product will reveal less scalp when styled because strong hold products tend to bind the hair strands more than light or medium hold products.
2. SHINE
Shine, which is the same thing as “finish,” refers to a dry, natural, light, medium, or a high-shine finish.
Styling products are categorized these finish levels. Some products, such as our Clay Pomade and Texture Sprays, gradually enhance from a low, natural shine to a high shine finish as you apply more product. Our other products, such as our Matte Paste, will always remain “dry” in your hair. In contrast, our water-based pomades, including Original Hold, Super Hold, Summer Edition, and Special Edition, are exclusively high-shine products.
3. STYLE
The last standard to consider, and likely the most important, is the desired style you’re aiming to achieve.
Most hair styling products are specialized, meaning they are formulated to perform better with certain styles and finished looks, for example:
Clays, Fibers and Pastes are typically better for texture, flow, choppy or messy looks.
High Shine Pomades are typically better for neat and controlled looks.
Texture and Volumizing Sprays are better suited for longer hair.
Hair Creams are best for accentuating your natural hair characteristics.
FINAL THOUGHTS
When you’re searching for a new styling product, consider these guidelines. I’m confident they’ll make the process easier and help you find the right one for you. Remember that there are no absolutes when it comes to which hair product is the best for what. It is up to you to feel comfortable and happy with your selection. I am available to you as a resource should you ever have any questions or doubts in your selection process, all you have to do is ask!
All the best,
